bookbinding

Create a perfect bound, folio bound, and hardbound book by hand. The construction of these books must be meticulous and approved by the instructors. Once you demonstrate that you can make each book, you are required to submit your best version of each one by the end of the semester.

sketches

Sketching out measurements, materials, diimensions, and theme/ color combination ideas makes the process a bit easier because you don't end up with covers the wrong size or text blocks that don't fit.

Hardcover books are more difficult than soft cover, but I enjoy making them.

Poking holes in a straight line in unfolded paper is tedious and worth the effort because crooked sewing throws everything else off.

It took several failed attempts to get the proper measurements down, and they still need to be adjusted depending on what material I use for the cover. Thicker materials, for example, need more wiggle room.

Adjusting the bookcloth before folding the edges of the cover over the boards is necessary because otherwise the edges by the spine are prone to ripping, and they don't lay or fold properly, causing the book to be hard to open.

I prefer waxed thread for sewing my signatures together. The size I've been sticking to is about .45mm thick.
